I saw a BBC documentary on Kraut Rock once, it said simply that a lot of these avant-garde alt-rock, art-rock, progressive, space rock bands came from Western Germany which was having a kind of zeitgeist cultural movement going on at the time, and «kraut» is a slur to refer to Germans, and that was it.
It’s a reference, at large, to the German tendency to overengineer things, for better or for worse. For example, Audi’s Quattro system was, in 1980, insanely complicated and also insanely effective, leading to their utter domination of rally motorsport for a while. Current Audi’s have an incredibly space-efficient engine bay, but at the same time, you have to take the front bumper off to do a lot of fairly normal work on the car. The G11 has a similarly overcomplicated action, where each round is pushed down, then rotated by a clockwork mechanism, then pushed forward.Best answer · 11I have no clue, but the phrase makes me think of «kraut rock», which is a quasi-pejorative term for a type of rock music that came out in the 70’s in Germany. Kraut Space Magic $ 6.00. There is a story from the 80s, wherein Germany had a tough decision to make. Either they could work to reunite the East and West, or they could make the G-11 work. They chose to tear down the wall. What could have been, right?
