This is an outstanding introduction to positional chess, emphasizing the simplicity of strategic thinking as opposed to highly tactical chess. I highly recommend this book to anybody without a solid understanding of positional chess, and even to anybody below 2000.
Stean speaks of the the activity of the pieces as being the ‘most important single feature of a chess position’. This comment should not be taken lightly by those wishing to build a computer program to play chess.
Michael Francis Stean (born 4 September 1953) is an English chess grandmaster, an author of chess books and a tax accountant.

Michael Francis Stean was born on the 4th of September 1953 in London, England. He finished 3rd at the 1973 World Junior Chess Championships behind Alexander Beliavsky and Tony Miles. Awarded the IM title in 1975 and the GM title in 1977 (The third Englishman to attain the title after Miles and Keene).
I have just worked my way through Michael Stean’s Simple Chess twice, and the final chapter three times. This book is another old favourite of mine. However, unlike O’Kelly’s Improve Your Chess Fast, this book has become a classic, albeit a little one. My old first edition paperback has just 116 pages.
