The number of states reporting 20 or more fentanyl confiscations every six months is increasing. From July to December 2014, 18 states reported 20 or more fentanyl drug confiscations (See Figure 1). By comparison, six states reported 20 or more fentanyl drug confiscations from July to December 2013.

Another rash of fentanyl-related overdoses have occurred; this time in the Chicago area. In the past several days there have been more than 82 opioid overdoses and seven deaths linked to the use of heroin contaminated with fentanyl.
The most commonly misused substances in Maryland are opioids, heroin, and cocaine. Eighty-nine percent of all overdose deaths in the state were opioid-related, with a 70 percent increase between 2015 and 2016, quadrupling since 2010. Following the trend of the opioid epidemic, fentanyl-related overdoses have been on the rise since 2013.
The data show the same trends for total opioid-related deaths, heroin deaths, and deaths associated with common prescription opioids. To find another 12-month period in which heroin overdose deaths were as low, you’d have to go back to the one that ended in June 2016.
